EN ISO 20345

Safety shoes are protective footwear that must be equipped with a toe cap. The toe protection made of steel, aluminium or plastic protects the foot reliably against pressure and impacts up to 200 Joule. Also, non-slip soles belong to the basic features of the safety shoes. The standard 20345 governs the basic requirements of safety shoes. Depending on the way the shoes are used and the respective requirements, one of the following safety levels needs to be selected: SB | S1 | S1P | S2 | S3 | S4 | S5 | S6 | S7

PROTECTION CLASSES UPDATE

Due to the adaptation of the EN ISO 20345:2022 and EN ISO 20347:2022, new safety classes are created to further subdivide the characteristics of safety and work shoes in the future. You can find further information on our overview page.

Safety Classes

4 steps on the way to your safety shoes

Your work shoes accompany you all day every day, which is why we supply safety footwear that is breathable and very comfortable. Breathable materials prevent moisture build-up so that you don’t need to worry about wet feet. They also protect you from injury. Safety shoes are available in many sizes for both men and women, aswell as in many sizes and colors to perfectly suit your Strauss safety clothing.

All-weather protective layer for Engelbert Strauss safety shoes

Step 1 – What do S1, S2, S3 and Co. stand for?

The safety shoe classes in detail

Basic Soe (toe cap and slip resistant)

Like SB + A (anti-static), E (energy is absorbed in the heel area)

Like S1 + P ( puncture resistant sole)

Like S1 + WPA (upper part of the sole is resistant to water penetration and water absorption for at least 60 minutes)

Like S2 + a puncture-proof sole and profiled sole

Basic shoes as completely waterproof safety boot with the additional requirements A and E

Like S4 + P (penetration-proof) with a profiled outer sole

Like S2 + also completely waterproof thanks to membrane and with a profiled sole

Like S3 + also completely waterproof thanks to membrane

A fuel-resistant sole according to EN ISO 20345:2022 is only an optional additional requirement – most Strauss safety shoes offer this performance nevertheless.

Safety shoes of the classes S1P, S3, S5 and S7 are equipped with a puncture-resistant sole made of metal or textile. Shoes that are certified to EN ISO 20345:2022 clearly indicate what type of penetration resistance this is. Textile insoles are marked with an additional S or L - if nothing is specified, it is a puncture-resistant steel midsole. An example:

S3: Safety shoes with metallic puncture-resistance

S3L: Safety shoes with textile puncture-resistance acc. to standard requirement

S3S: Safety shoes with textile puncture-resistance acc. to higher requirement

The difference in textile puncture protection lies in the diameter of the test nail used to apply pressure to the sole. The smaller nail diameter (3.5 mm) creates greater pressure, which is why the puncture resistance is rated higher (higher requirement) compared to a larger nail diameter (basic requirement).

Additional protective properties
  • FO – Resistance of the shoe sole to hydrocarbons (oils, petrol, etc.)
  • HI – Thermal insulation, protection against burns on the soles of the feet of up to 150 °C (on hot surfaces for a contact period of up to 30 minutes
  • CI – Cold insulation of the sole, protects the feet against low temperatures and, in particular, cold surfaces
  • HRO – Resistance to contact heat, brief exposure up to 300 °C
  • ESD – Leak resistance of between > 0,1 Megaohm (1,0 x 105 Ohm) and < 100 Megaohm (1,0 x 108 Ohm)

Many Strauss S3 safety shoes are equipped with a dryplexx® functional membrane, going beyond the standard requirements. Thanks to their permanent and reliable protection against water penetration, these S3 shoes possess characteristics comparable to safety shoes of class S7.

What does ESD mean?

This is about preventing electrostatic discharging between two bodies, for instance human to human, or human to equipment or part. We have all experienced electrical shocks from a spark when touching a door handle. In companies that use sensitive equipment, the smallest of sparks could destroy parts or delete data. To prevent this you need to wear ESD shoes that prevent electrostatic charging. They are required for instance in the following operations:

  • when producing sensitive, electrical parts
  • in flammable fluids and gases
  • in laboratories and medical areas
  • in paint shops
  • working with microchips

ESD footwear is NOT suitable for electricians that work at sources with electrical voltage.

Safety Shoes confirm to ESD standards
What is antistatic footwear?

The EU ISO Norm EN20345 and the EN20347 state that antistatic footwear should be used to reduce electrostatic charging and guarantee its discharge. They should therefore be worn wherever electrical shocks from equipment or parts are possible or where there is a risk that flammable substances could ignite on sparks.

Step 2 – Which safety shoes are best suited for my requirements?

What footwear is best in summer, and which is best in winter?

Engelbert Strauss has waterproof safety shoes, safety trainers, boots and wellies with warm inner linings for excellent performance in the winter:

Models: Okomu mid, Okomu high, slip-on boots Okomu high, Comfort12

Are you looking for lightweight trainers for the summer or for warm indoor rooms?

Our safety sandals S1 are ideal thanks to their air permeability. They combine all-round protection with a pleasant foot climate. Models: Pallas, Siom x-12

Do you need special safety shoes?

12er Foot width for wide feet

Wide feet need special attention and should not be laced up too tightly. To guarantee a high level of comfort we supply the 12 cm foot width as a special size for wide feet:

Metal-free and leather-free safety

Do you have an allergy or simply want to avoid wearing animal materials? Are you looking for lightweight safety trainers without metal whose steel toe caps are not thermally conductive? We have a range of protective shoes with plastic toe caps that offer great comfort and are approximately 50 % lighter than steel caps:

Step 3 – How do I clean and care for my safety footwear correctly?

Work shoes need to satisfy a number of requirements whilst also being subjected to heavy wear and dirt depending on your job. The better you look after your work shoes, the longer you will be able to use them.

The right cleaning products for your Engelbert Strauss safety footwear

How to clean

  • Regularly check that they are still intact or if they are damaged
  • If your safety shoes are very dirty, brush off the dry dirt first
  • Then you can wash them off under water and dry them well afterwards (not on radiators – the leather will become brittle!). Ideally, you should stuff them with newspaper.

How to care

Footwear made of smooth leather

To ensure that your safety shoes remains durable, it is important to apply a care product at regular intervals. Footwear that is well looked after remains beautiful and breathable for longer.

Nubuck leather

Suede needs to be cared for differently than smooth leather. Never use products that contain grease or wax because this will spoil the suede. We recommend regularly roughening up Nubuck material with a brush and using an impregnation spray.

How to impregnate

To ensure lasting protection, we recommend the regular use of a waterproofing spray.

How to prevent odours

To prevent odours developing at an early stage, we recommend not wearing the same work shoes every day. This gives them the opportunity to air out. If your shoes got damp at work, let them dry out completely before wearing them again.
